I’ve made the decision to publish some useful advice on how to createlifelike animal portraits in various mediums. Beginning animal portraitistswanting to improve the artistic quality of their charcoal and oil colour petportraits asked me the following question numerous times, “what is your secretcreating such fantastic lifelike pet portraits”, and therefore I’m going to tryexplaining it right here.

There’re some essential rules in the process of making lifelike animalportraits.  These include; do not begin instantly to paint or draw petportrait art if you’re a beginner; draw objects from reality such as tables,apples, mugs or one of your hands to get familiar with how to find the correctangles; be willing to learn draw and paint techniques from the classic mastersand stop appreciating modern painting art only, try finding books about theirpainting styles!  

Today, art school students will usually not be educated about how to createlifelike pet portrait paintings or drawings. The best pet portrait artists aretrue animal lovers. This is significant due to being able to express theanimal’s character and personality.

My own experiences made clear that the self-learning period can be very longand difficult and some people will never reach the stage I’ve gotten to, nomatter how eagerly they’ll try. Even today, I’m still learning new skills everytime when drawing or painting pets! Always observe your portrait work with ahealthy dose of criticism and learn from your previous mistakes.

Every pet portrait you draw will get better then the last one and never stoptrying. Take a close look at how the old masters’ animal portrait paintingswere created, such as works by Vermeer and Rembrandt. Using a bit of theirtechniques will definitely improve your pet portraiture skills!
